Ask Mattel – Answers for May 15th, 2012
Welcome to another edition of Ask Mattel! In this session, Matty gives a surprisingly long thought out answer regarding the SDCC Death statue, gives us a hint at the SDCC Dark Knight Rises exclusive figure, and more! Let’s jump in.
Brandon Gibbs asks: Can you explain why there are no SDCC exclusives in DCUC scale this year and why you instead chose to do a less-articulated 8-inch version of death. As someone who has almost every DCUC figure, I frankly, feel a little insulted that you have nothing for me this year.
Some fans were confused (or Angry) that we didn’t do a 6” DCU (Classics) item at SDCC this year. Honestly, a big part of that was that we now have CIE on Mattycollector.com. In the past, we needed SDCC to put out 6” figures (for the “overall collection”) that didn’t fit into the retail line for one reason or another. Whether this was due to character selection (Lobo) piece count (Plastic Man) or a plus’ d up package with light and sounds (Wonder-Twins), in the past SDCC was our avenue to deliver items that really “didn’t work at retail for one reason or another”.
Now that we have Club Infinite Earths on Mattycollector.com, we can offer all of these executions without having to wait for an annual show. Honestly, fans are in the best position ever for 6”. By supporting the online club (which we know was a “risk” in year 1 with a lot of unknowns at the time we sold the sub) fans are really going to be rewarded. Ideally it will be like getting a DCU 6” SDCC item every month. (no need to toy hunt!) Metron is a great example. How in the world would we have done that at retail? He would have had to be part of a “deluxe” assortment with a Batman and Superman deluxe figure and would have been short packed with many fans unable to find him. He would have been better off at SDCC to do the full chair.
BUT now that we have CIE we can just include him (and other collector only figures) without retail restrains or having to wait for SDCC. With the online club the gloves are off and you will really see some great collector product (pending the sub goes forward in 2013, which I can’t imagine it won’t!).
Because we now have CIE delivering SDCC quality 6″ figures every month, we decided to use SDCC therefore to try out new form factors for fans to collect the DC Universe. This was not a slight to fans at all. you are still getting SDCC quality 6″ figures, and thanks to CIE you will get them every month instead of only once a year!
Victor asks: How about if the MOTUC line include a series of pink variants (and other figures), and proceeds could be donated to Breast Cancer Research? Such variants could include Filmation colors Prince Adam, pink minicomics Sorceress and Teela, and pink SwiftWind.
News – Hasbro 6″ Avengers Movie Figures Sighted At U.S. Retail!
Over on the Fwoosh, forum member Psychography posted a photo of the 6″ Avengers movie figures he found at his local Walmart in Louisville, KY. That’s right, they have officially been spotted in the United States! The hunt is on people.
Also included by the same forum member is a list of the UPC numbers for each figure to help make it easier to hunt for the figures.
Continue reading after the jump for the full photo and the UPC numbers!

Review – The Hulk – The Avengers (Movie), Marvel Select
While figure collectors everywhere are still waiting with baited breath for the Hasbro 6″ movie Avengers figures to hit retail, Marvel Select has just released a figure of the Hulk from the movie. My local comic shop, Keith’s Comics in Dallas, TX, got them in yesterday. I went and picked one up and felt the need to review him right away!
Mark Ruffalo did a fantastic job as Bruce Banner, and the Hulk in the Avengers movie. That’s right, that was Ruffalo, doing some motion capture acting for Hulk, so it would be entirely his performance. I love that.
And as much as I am still very much going to buy the 6″ Hasbro movie Hulk, I couldn’t resist picking up this green behemoth as well!
Keep reading to find out if Hulk smashed (go I hate myself for that) my expectations.
MTV Geek Recently Interviewed Me!
That’s right, Jason Stephens of MTV Geek recently did an interview with me regarding my customs. We talk about everything from my artistic process, to my favorite pieces I’ve made, and I even relate a war story. Click here to read the full interview. I couldn’t feel more honored for it. Thanks to Jason Stephens, aka Lemonjuice McGee, for the opportunity!
News – Marvel Legends Avengers Trailer
Happy Avengers Day everybody! If you haven’t already seen it, you should really check out this fan made trailer. He used nothing but Marvel Legends action figures combined with stop motion animation to recreate the theatrical trailer for the movie The Avengers.
What better way to help celebrate Avengers Day than by checking out this really cool trailer?
Review – Yellow Lion & Hunk – Voltron Classics, Mattel (20 Pictures!)
Yesterday I reviewed the Mattel Voltron Classics Red Lion and Lance set, and today I’m going to take a look at the Yellow Lion with its pilot Hunk. Like yesterday, this review is going to be chocked full of photos and text, because there is a lot to cover.
The review will be formatted the same as yesterday to accommodate the unique nature of the Yellow Lion and Hunk set.
So how does the Yellow Lion stack up? Does he fit in with the Red Lion, and will be work as Voltron’s right leg? Keep reading to find out! And don’t forget to click on each picture to enlarge it!
Review – Red Lion & Lance – Voltron Classics, Mattel (20 Pictures!)
I suppose I should warn you now, this isn’t going to be an ordinary review. Due to the unique nature of the Voltron Red Lion set, it’s going to be longer and formatted just a bit differently to accomodate. I suppose it makes sense, considering Voltron has such an awesome (awesome used in the actual definition here) presence that one can’t help but give way to it.
But seriously, this one’s gonna be a doozy. There’s a lot of stuff to cover, from both the Lance figure and the Red Lion himself, and I hope you’re in for the ride. Join us as we take a look at the very first piece of the Mattel 23″ Voltron, the Red Lion with his pilot Lance. And don’t forget to click on each picture to enlarge it!
Ask Mattel – Answers for May 1st, 2012
Welcome to another edition of Ask Matty! We’ve got a lot of questions about Batman and DC Universe Classics, so let’s jump in and see Mattel’s answers!
Jason Melo asks: Hi, Huge DCU & YJ 6′ fan and collector. You have mentioned that 2013 your relaunch the 6′? Does this mean you might combine the 2 and continue with the characters? Have been waiting for months, years for a real Superboy\Connor and Huntress and more main characters like Lois Lane, Cassandra\wondergirl, Jimmy Olsen, Elogated man etc…
At this point, it’s too early to comment on 2013 beyond what we’ve said. However, we do love hearing your figure suggestions.
Matthew Roche asks: We know that there is no collector aimed DC at retail until 2013 (we’ve all heard the announcements by now). When does matty intend on announcing what will be offered at SDCC??
