Review – 23″ Voltron – Voltron Classics, Mattel

Mattel 23" Voltron Classics Action Figure Red Black Blue Yellow Green Lion Keith Pidge Hunk Lance Allura

And now we get to what everybody has been waiting for in this line: the completed Voltron! This is the moment I’ve been waiting for since he was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2011. Mattel gave us our first hit back in February when the first lion, the Red Lion, was released. Fans have been waiting with bated breath to finally piece Voltron together to see in person just how big he is, and how well he holds up. This is one of the largest Voltron toys ever made, only being slightly beaten by a 24″ Voltron put out by Trendmasters in the late 90’s.
This review will focus on Voltron as a complete action figure on its own, and not talk about the individual lions. I’ve talked about them already. Continue after the jump as I take a closer look at Mattel’s Voltron.

Review – Henrietta – Evil Dead 2, NECA

NECA Evil Dead 2 Henrietta Deadite Action Figure Horror Halloween Sam Raimi Bruce Campbell Army of Darkness
To celebrate Evil Dead 2’s 25th anniversary, NECA Toys has been steadily releasing action figures based on the movie. Up until now, they’ve all been variants of Bruce Campbell’s character Ash Williams. However, now we’re getting a brand new character in Henrietta. In the movie, Henrietta was portrayed by Ted Raimi, director Sam Raimi’s little brother. He had to be inside this torturous foam latex fat suit all day, and they reportedly had to frequently drain his sweat from it. That part has no bearing on this review, but if it grossed you out, then I’m just preparing you for this figure. It’s disgusting.

In the movie, Henrietta was the wife of Professor Knowby, the former owner of the cabin that Ash and crew get stuck in. He had read from the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, or Book of the Dead. This released an ancient Evil Force that ended up possessing his wife Henrietta. Professor Knowby was forced to dismember her and lock her in the cellar to save his own life, and with the cabin full of people and the Evil Force stronger than ever, they now have to contend with the lady of the house.

So join me as I take a look a closer look at Henrietta!

Review – Black Lion & Keith – Voltron Classics, Mattel (24 Pictures!)

Mattel 23" Voltron Classics Black Lion and Keith Action Figure Set

So this is it. After waiting nine months since the first Lion/Pilot set was released by Mattel in February, we’ve come to the end of the road for Voltron. We now have the final piece of the puzzle, the Black Lion with pilot Keith. Mattel no doubt waited to release the Black Lion last so fans wouldn’t be able to connect any of the lions together until the very end. Well played Mattel. Well played.
Just so you know, I’ll be reviewing the Black Lion as its own figure. I will not be reviewing the completed Voltron here. That will be its own separate review. For now, I’m just taking a look at the Black Lion and the Keith figure. So without further ado, let’s take a look at Mattel’s Voltron Black Lion with pilot Keith set.

Toy Reviews From Around the Net – October 1st – 7th 2012

NoisyDvL5 at itsalltrue.net has been doing something interesting for a couple of weeks now. He’s been adding a new feature to his site that he calls “Review Roundup” wherein he adds links to toy websites the net over who have done a review in that past week. Well, he’s been gracious enough to include this very website in his review roundup feature. The idea behind this is not only to bring visitors to each other’s websites, but also to allow for the toy community to stumble upon a website they may not know about, and possibly a toy line as well. So in keeping with the whole “toy community” idea, I thought it would be best if I started doing the same thing. My thinking is that all of the websites involved in the “roundup” could do this and that way we’d be helping each other out. Ya know…like a community.

This week’s list includes twenty-two different websites and features a total of sixty-nine reviews! The Reviews are all categorized by major brands, but the smaller brands are all grouped together under the “Miscellaneous” heading. Independent toy companies, such as Onell Design or Spy Monkey Creations are listed under the “7th Market” heading.

Review – Hero Ash – Evil Dead 2, NECA

NECA Evil Dead 2 Army of Darkness Hero Ash Williams 7" Action Figure

NECA Toys has recently been putting out a line of figures to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the cult hit movie Evil Dead 2. So far we’ve seen a few variants of the movie’s protagonist, Ash Williams, in various states he found himself in in the movie. With the second series out, NECA has now given us the best and most iconic version of Ash: with his chainsaw hand, or “Hero Ash” as he’s called on the packaging. This is how everyone remembers the character, even though he technically only appeared like this through the climax of Evil Dead 2, and the beginning of Army of Darkness.

McFarlane Toys attempted their own version of Ash from Army of Darkness back in the early 2000’s, but it was rather abysmal. There was really nothing redeeming about that figure at all, so for many fans this is the figure they’ve been waiting for for a very long time. Does it meet expectations and give fans the Ash figure they’ve always wanted? Does it beat McFarlane Toys’ attempt at the character (spoiler alert: yes it does)? Keep reading to find out.
