By far the most time consuming of the U-Foes to tackle was Vector. Like X-Ray, he was a character who had two dimensional detailing on a three dimensional surface. Only with Vector, it was a LOT more of it, set up in a very specific way. I had to utilize a lot of reference to paint him correctly, and even then there’s some angles that just weren’t available of him, so I had to guess how everything connected. He started as a Marvel Universe Silver Surfer whose nose I removed and base coated in orange. After that, I went on Photoshop and blocked out each layer of his detailing to make it was easy and stress free as possible. Then I just slowly went through and penciled it out and started painting. It took a lot of patience, and a very steady hand, but eventually Vector was completely finished and ready to join his U-Foes brethren in taking down the Marvel heroes!

Vapor started out as a Marvel Universe Ms. Marvel figure. I had to sand down her domino mask and sculpt over it to smooth it out, and the rest was just painting her. I took some hot glue and added to the tips of her hair, so I could have it fade from red into a translucent green. And to add even more display value to her, I made her a 100% scratch built Vapor Base that she can sit in. The frame is made from aluminum foil, and it’s just covered completely by hot glue, and painted with clear green. She can easily be displayed in the base, or out of it. I always love adding these kinds of options to my customs.

X-Ray was a bit tough to tackle, because his design was basically two-dimensional detailing on a three dimensional body. Easy enough to draw on paper, but not so easy to replicate onto an action figure. But I gave it a go. He started out as a clear Marvel Universe Silver Surfer whose nose I removed, and then covered him in clear purple. Then I painted the center of his chest and back white and had it fade out from there, almost like a starburst, fading into the purple. I added the splotchy black dots in the center of his torso on both sides, and painted the black lines that circle it all over his body. It’s hard to see the lines normally, but the reason I chose a clear Silver Surfer is because when you hold X-Ray up to a light, it shines through and you can see all the detail on his body. It was a risky move, but I think it paid off.

The U-Foes are some of the more obscure Marvel villains out there, but they have a very strong fan base, and I wanted to bring their likeness to the Marvel Universe 3 3/4″ toy line. I started with Ironclad. He started out as a Marvel Universe Hulk that I had to modify. I sculpted onto the top of his head to square it out, and sculpted onto his feet to give him the two-toed look. Then, I used my dremel to remove all the pants detailing from his legs. I took him completely apart and painted him with Tamiya Silver, put him back togethewr, gave him his skirt, and now he’s ready to take on the Hulk!
