Review – Castle Grayskullman – Masters of the Universe Classics, Mattel

Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskullman Action Figure

Back in 2011, Mattel held a Create-A-Character contest for their Masters of the Universe Classics line. The idea was that you could submit as many character designs as you wanted, and the winner would be made into an action figure in 2012 for their 30th Anniversary sub line. Nobody but the people at Mattel knew who the winner was until the big reveal at San Diego Comic-Con this past Summer. Lo and behold the winning figure was none other than the subject of this review, Castle Grayskullman! He was created by Daniel Benedict and ever since the reveal has met with mostly positive reactions. To many fans, it was clear why Mattel picked this as the winner, as it seemed to perfectly represent the spirit of the contest and Masters of the Universe as a brand. It seemed like something that could have sincerely been a figure back in the vintage line, which I think gave it that edge.

But that’s, of course, speaking purely of the design. How does the figure hold up though? Join me as I take a closer look and find out.

CASTLE GRAYSKULLMAN
Heroic Embodiment of Castle Grayskull™

REALNAME: Not Applicable

During the Second Ultimate Battleground, Hordak® and King Hssss’ grand army pressed in against the allied heroes of Eternia®. In the darkest moment of battle, all hope seemed lost as many heroes fell, including Snake Man-At-Arms® and Stratos®. Reaching out through the Orb of Power, hidden deep inside Castle Grayskull®, He-Man® and the new Sorceress® used an unrepeatable spell to call upon the Powers of Grayskull™ and infuse life into the very spirit of the castle itself. Rising from the castle’s hidden Chamber of Defense; Castle Grayskullman™ marched into battle, swinging his dual swords of power, helping to turn the tide.

News – Masters of the Universe Classics Spotted at Wal-Mart

A thread over on the He-Man.org forums has been posted of someone finding an endcap full of Masters of the Universe Classics Roboto and Gygor figures at a Moreno Valley, California Wal-Mart. This photo was speculated by many to be fake, and with good cause since this is unannounced from Mattel. However, He-Man.org user Dredgen posted a second photo of the figures he purchased, along with a receipt. So it seems clear that he did in fact find MOTUC figures at a Walmart.

Apparently Roboto was selling for $16.97 and Gygor was selling for $24.97. It is yet unclear why Wal-Mart is selling these since these figures are supposed to be online exclusives through Mattel’s Mattycollector.com website. What’s stranger is that this Walmart is selling the figures for much cheaper than Mattel originally sold them for.

Review – Mekaneck – Masters of the Universe Classics, Mattel

Masters of the Universe MOTUC Mekaneck Action Figure From Mattel

Mattel manages to spread out the characters in the Masters of the Universe Classics toy line by having an equal amount of the more popular characters with the lesser known characters. This is a great business strategy, and makes it even more exciting when one of your favorites finally shows up. Mekaneck is one of my top 3 favorite MOTU characters (the other two being Man-E-Faces, and my absolute favorite which is Rio Blast), and it’s grea to finally have him in the line. He’s without a doubt an essential character to the Masters of the Universe mythos, being that his was one of the figures released early on, when MOTU was still a new brand.

So join me as I take a closer look at Mekaneck and see if he’s lived up to the expectations of many fans.

MEKANECK
Heroic Human Periscope!™

REAL NAME: Orius

Injured in the Battle of the Avion during the Great Unrest, Orius was brought by Duncan to Castle Grayskull where he was healed by the Sorceress. The magic spell replaced his neck with an ever-expanding mechanical construction made of microscopic nanites. By increasing or decreasing the number of nanites in his body, Orius gained the ability to grow his neck to almost unlimited length. Taking the code name Mekaneck, he served the royal household as a loyal member of the Masters of the Universe, using his amazing periscope neck to spy on the evil enemy.

News – MOTUC Procrustus and Granamyr Delayed

MOTUC Masters of the Universe Classics Procrustus Action Figure From MattelI just got word today that both the Masters of the Universe Classics Procustus and Granamyr figures are delayed. Both are set to go on sale this month, December 17th. They will still be on sale, but they will not ship until they’ve arrived in the warehouse. We already got some word that Gramanyr was delayed, but Procrustus being delayed was quite surprising. Anything ordered with Granamyr and Procrustus will also be delayed, so everything can ship at the same time.

News – MOTUC Granamyr Packaging Revealed

Masters of the Universe Classics MOTUC Granamyr Dragon In Package Front Rudy Obrero PaintingMattel just revealed boxed pictures of the upcoming MOTUC Granamyr on their Mattycollector Facebook page. The front of the package displays a new painting by long time Masters of the Universe artist Rudy Obrero. The figure will come painted in “Filmation Red”, as per the fan vote back at SDCC 2011. The back of the package features an all new bio for Granamyr. The figure will be disassembled inside the package, no doubt to make the box as small as possible to save on shipping, hence the lack of window display and the need for the awesome painting on the front. Granamyr will be released this December 17th on Mattycollector.com for $80. Check out the full sized packaged images after the jump!

Ask Mattel – Answers for November 15th, 2012

Mattel Mattycollector Logo

Thomas asks: Toyguru spoke of a EU distribution center after SDCC this year. What is the chances it will be up and running by the end of next year in time for Castle Grayskull, as this will make a massive difference to EU customers considering the pre-order.

At this time, no plans, We simply do not have enough customers in any one area in the EU to justify this logistically.

Mike asks: Will DHL be offered as a shipping method for Castle Grayskull? Even if it is added later, could we pick it via the new ‘sub page’?

News – Just Three Days Left to Pre-Order Castle Grayskull!

Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull BlueprintsIn case you still haven’t had a chance to yet, you only have three days left to pre-order the Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull playset! This is sure to be the greatest MOTUC item ever produced, and if you’re a Masters of the Universe fan, then you should definitely consider getting this. It costs absolutely no money to pre-order it. You’re charged nothing until next December when it ships, and it will become the coolest centerpiece in your entire MOTUC collection. The deadline for the pre-order minimum is November 12th, so don’t wait! If the minimum isn’t met by then, the castle will not get made at all. And if that wasn’t enough, Mattel is including a free incentive for those who pre-order:

As if the fact it’s Castle Grayskull® isn’t enough, we’re sweetening the offer with a deal even Skeletor® couldn’t resist… if we meet the 11/12/12 minimum production goal date and production moves forward, every pre-order placed between 10/16/12 and 1/3/13 will include a first-ever exclusive Masters of the Universe® Classics cross-sell poster!

Featuring all MOTUC figures released at the time of production and printed in beautiful full-color, this illustrative poster will be consistent in size to the Preternia™ and Sub-ternia™ maps created for Club Eternia® (approximately 30”w x 20”h). You’ll want two of them – one to frame and the other to track your collection! Although some sets will be available at MattyCollector.com after pre-orders are filled, the price will be higher and they will not include this authentic collector must-have poster. The only way to get both Castle Grayskull® and the poster guaranteed is to order during the pre-order period, so don’t wait. (And if you’ve already pre-ordered, yes, you’ll get the poster, too.)

Continue after the jump for more about the playset, and a special message from Scott “Toyguru” Neitlich in regards to Castle Grayskull.

News – Preorder MOTUC Castle Grayskull Today!

Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull BlueprintsIf you haven’t already heard, Mattel is trying to get a Masters of the Universe scale Caslte Grayskull made! This is a huge undertaking, and seriously surprising that Mattel could even attempt it. In order to even try to get it made, Mattel needs a minimum amount of preorders. And they don’t have the budget to mock up a prototype beforehand. The only thing fans have to go on are a series of blueprints showing off the scale, dimensions, and play features the castle will have. The only other caveat really, is the price. It’s going to cost $250 + shipping and tax. That is definitely not a small amount of money. This is going to be a very small production run though, just like everything else MOTUC related. And the castle really is going to be huge, so it seems that the cost could be justifiable. At least to me, the price becomes even more justifiable when you consider that Hasbro is re-releasing the deluxe Millennium Falcon from a few years back, this time in vintage style packaging, and it’s going to be sold for $250. And it’s a mass retail release.

At first you may be wary to preorder something that isn’t even made yet, but the best part of this preorder is that you put no money down. The preorder charges your card for exactly $0.00 and when (not if) the Castle goes through, absolutely no money will leave your account until the estimated release date of December 2013. You could put away $25 a month and by this time next year you’ll have more than enough to buy it. If this sounds like something you even want a little bit, I’d recommend going over to Mattycollector.com and preordering it.

Still not convinced? Continue after the jump for the full sized blueprints, a video of a foam mockup showing the scale of the castle, a message from the Four Horsemen, and a ton more detail regarding the castle, to get all the information you need to make an informed decision.
