Due to the way the license is set up, NECA wasn’t allowed to make a straight 7″ figure of Michael Keaton’s Batman 1989 portrayal. The only way they could do it is to paint it in the old NES video game colors. With the sculpt being excellent, I decided to change it and repaint the entire thing to look just like the Batman 1989 movie. This involved taking apart the entire figure (luckily NECA makes this easy with how their figures are constructed), including removing the head from inside the cowl (yes there’s a full Michael Keaton face under there). All the pieces were prepped, and then painted. I even put detailing in the face, including the black makeup around the eyes. For the cape, I dediced to do something extra. I took some black rayon material, and used a movie accurate cape pattern to make it. I then made a second cape, and added some wires running through the top for Batman to hold in his hands outstretched to mimic when he first appears in the movie. And now this custom Batman 1989 action figure is ready to take down the criminals of Gotham City!
Custom Action Figure – Ra’s Al Ghul, League of Shadows (Movie Style)
Here is my latest custom, Ra’s Al Ghul in his League of Shadows ninja gear from Batman Begins! I always wanted Mattel to make this version, but since they never did I just had to do it myself. Ra’s Al Ghul has been rendered in complete movie accurate detail, down to the plating on the back of his gloves and even his belt. I even sculpted in and removed the weird open mouth gap the Ra’s head had before. Click on the photo below to see the full photo set and detailed description on how it was made. Click here to see the video for a bunch of exclusive WIP photos! And if you’re interested in owning this custom League of Shadows Ra’s Al Ghul, it’s currently for auction on eBay. I always wanted Mattel to make a proper Ra’s Al Ghul Batman Begins figure, but since that never happened, here I bring you Ra’s Al Ghul in full League of Shadows ninja gear! Ra’s al Ghul was made using a Star Wars the Black Series Episode 3 Obi-Wan Kenobi, the head from a Movie Masters Ra’s Al Ghul, and the forearms from a Movie Masters Batman Begins Batman. I fused the Batman Begins forearms to the Obi-Wan arms, and used Aves Apoxie Sculpt to blend and fill in the gaps. I also added plating to the back of the hands (including the rivets!) with styrene. The lower cloak was replaced with fabric. The belt is made using two strips of styrene, with the belt buckle being fodder that happened to be perfectly movie accurate. Everything was repainted several shades of dark brown to match the movie, with the gauntlets dry brushed lightly for a metallic look. The head was also completely repainted, and I even sculpted in to cover that weird open mouth gap he had before. One katana later and League of Shadows Ra’s Al Ghul is ready to take down Batman and do all that is necessary to cleanse the world of corruption!

This custom Arkham Origins Batman action figure was really fun to work on, because I just got to go crazy with my dremel. Well, not completely. I wanted Batman to look battle damaged, as he does late in the Arkham Origins game. I actually researched stills from the game to make sure the battle damage was accurate. To achieve the damage, I used my dremel on some parts (such as the bullet mark on the chest), but for most of it I used my carbide scriber to dig into the figure to actually give the damage dimension. I then painted inside each damage mark with some silver paint to show the metal plating underneath shining through. I also gave Batman his shock gloves. In the Arkham Origins game, Batman gets these from the Electrocutioner. Once again, I wanted to make sure they were accurate. I used a combination of some styrene rods, Aves Apoxie Sculpt, and some electronic wiring to put the gloves together. I made sure they wouldn’t interfere with articulation, and would be nice and sturdy. All that was left was to paint up the gloves, and dry brush some gray shades all over the figure to give it more of a weathered look, and now Arkham Origins Batman, while tired I’m sure, is ready to fight for his life against Black Mask’s assassins!

New Custom Figures – Doomstroke and Justice Lords Batman (Movie Concept)
Hey everyone. Back again with some new custom action figures. This week I bring you some DC Comics goodness. First up, I have a movie concept Justice Lords Batman figure, complete with a Nolan inspired fabric cape! And I also have one that many of you may not even know about, Doomstroke! Doomstroke is an amalgam of Doomsday and Deathstroke that appeared briefly in the Superman/Batman story “Night and Day”, which largely took place in a universe where a bunch of DC characters were amalgamated into one another. I love mashups like that, so I couldn’t resist. Just click on each photo below to take you to the fully custom gallery. Also be sure to check out the videos I made for my custom Justice Lords Batman and custom Doomstroke to see some exclusive WIP (work in progress) photos! Thanks for looking.

Don’t forget to check out the video I made for this custom Justice Lords Batman near the bottom of the page to see some exclusive WIP (work in progress) photos!
I’ve already done a movie concept custom Man of Steel version of a Justice Lords Superman, so hey, why not do a movie concept Justice Lords Batman? This custom is made using the Man of Steel General Zod for the body, the forearms, feet, and belt from a Movie Masters Batman Begins, and the hands, shoulder pads, and head from a Movie Masters Dark Knight Batman. The new Justice Lords Batman emblem is cut from styrene, as is the piping around it. I also added some styrene to widen the boot tops. The cape is fabric and cut in the shape of the Nolan Batman cape. I went out and tracked down the best fabric weight for a figure in this scale, and made my own pattern. It can wrap over Justice Lords Batman’s shoulders, and be tucked behind them as well. I also made it long enough that when it’s pulled in front, all the cape tips are drooped on the floor all around him, in typical Batman fashion. A little bit of paint later, and Justice Lords Batman is ready to join Superman in keeping the public “safe”, Orwell style.
News – Closer Look at NECA Batman: Arkham Origins 1/4 Scale Action Figure
Something that some people may have forgotten about is that NECA has an upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins 1/4 scale action figure! It was on display at the 2014 New York Toy Fair. Now, NECA has taken some really great photos of the Batman: Arkham Origins figure to give everyone a much better look at what they’re getting. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but this figure does have upper torso articulation, like a floating ab joint. The NECA Batman: Arkham Origins 1/4 scale figure is due out in May of 2014.
