The Mattel Batman Unlimited Arkham Origins Batman figure looks great, and has wonderful poseability from the waist down (double knee joints!), but was severely lacking in the upper body area. I went through and gave the figure a bunch of new articulation. First thing I did was take some pieces from a movie Mr. Fantastic figure and gave Batman double elbow joints. This also still allows for a bicep swivel, and even a swivel at the glove. I’ve also given him a floating ab joint! This took a very long time to carefully get done, but basically it involved a lot of scoring with an X-Acto knife so I wouldn’t have to use two figures. I implanted some parts from a NECA figure and made it all fit, and now Batman can bend forward, backward, even side-to-side! An ab joint is one of the most important on a figure. It can make or break a pose, so I couldn’t let the lack of an ab joint slide. To top it off, I drilled a small hole in his hand and now he can hold a batarang! Batman can’t always rely on his fists, after all. With Batman’s added articulation, he’s now ready to take down the criminals of Gotham City!

The articulation on the Marvel Legends Amazing Spider-Man 2 figure is great, though the paint job was lacking. I’ve given the figure a full repaint, and made it much more vibrant than before (especially the blue areas) with deep shading and bright highlights. I even outlined all the webbing on his suit to help it stand out more. I also embedded some Rare Earth magnets in his feet so he can stick to most metal surfaces. I took the Andrew Garfield Peter Parker head from the first movie figure and dremeled it to fit the new figure, gave him a web line, and gave a weathered repaint to the Young Justice Red Arrow rooftop display, and now Spidey is ready to take down Electro, Rhino, and anyone else who threatens New York!

Deathstroke is one of my favorite comic book characters ever, and I absolutely love his design in the Arkham Origins video game. I was excited when Mattel said they were making a figure of his appearance in the game, and I think the figure looks great. Unfortunately, that’s about all it does. While it has quite a bit of articulation, most of it is useless due to pointlessly being hindered by the figure’s sculpt. So I shaved some plastic from around the elbows and knees and doubled their range of motion. I also sliced the legs at the thighs and added thigh rotators, and even completely reworked the feet into actual, functional rocker ankles to help with stability and natural posing. Then I gave the figure a very specific silver dry brushing to make his armor look used and worn to match the game. I also took a DCUC Slade Wilson head cast and fully painted it, trying to make it look realistic as possible. I even gave him a big scar on his face to match the video game. So now Deathstroke has two alternate heads, and a full range of poseability. He’s now ready to fulfill the contract on Batman’s head and claim his prize!

I’ve always loved the design of the Arkham Asylum Joker figure, but being a DC Direct figure it was severely lacking in the articulation. I aimed to change that, so I took the existing figure and made him really poseable. I shaved away some plastic inside the shoulders and hips and greatly improved their range of motion. I also sliced the arms and legs and made some bicep and thigh swivels, and I popped apart the torso from the legs and made a waist rotator joint (that’s right, the original figure couldn’t even turn at the waist!). So now that the Joker can actually move, he’s ready take on the Batman as the Clown Prince of Crime!

Custom Figure – It’s 80’s Cartoon Villain Week with The Shredder & Mumm-Ra!

Yep, you read the title right. I’m dubbing this week 80’s Cartoon Villain Week here at Mint Condition Customs, as I’m bringing you all custom figures of The Shredder (the constant thorn in the side of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and Mumm-Ra the Ever Living (the evil undead menace to the Thundercats). The Shredder is based on his look in the current Nickelodeon cartoon series. I had to combine the parts from both of the current Shredder figures to make him fully poseable, since neither one has great articulation on its own. He was also given a full repaint to help bring out the details and make his armor shiny!

Mumm-Ra was something I started a long time ago, but only recently finished once the idea of this week’s theme dawned on me. I took the Thundercats Classics Mumm-Ra figure and installed some wiring in his big hollow torso and gave him light up eyes! With just the flip of a switch on his back Mumm-Ra’s eyes glow an eerie red, as if summoning the ANCIENT SPIRITS OF EVIL! He was also given some poseable bandages, handmade cape accurate to the cartoon, and a full repaint to look more realistic. Be sure to click the links below to see the full photo sets and descriptions for how each custom was made.

Ever since I first saw the Thundercats Classics Mumm-Ra action figure, I saw a lot of potential. The big hollow torso meant I could fit some wiring in there, and that was what made me give him light up eyes! I’m a sucker for gimmicks like that, so I had to do it. I made sure it wouldn’t interfere with the head movement, so the head still retains full articulation and stays lit up the whole time with a flip of a switch on the back. I also took some poseable ribbon and made him some bandages that can be wrapped around the figure any way you like, and even posed to look like they’re shooting out, as if Mumm-Ra is about to grab one of the Thundercats to mummify! And of course I had to give Mumm-Ra his awesome cape. I took some red and black fabric and combined them to be show accurate, and made the cape look tattered and worn. It looks cool, is easily attachable and detachable from the figure, and moves perfectly in conjuction with the arms of the figure. After a full repaint to make him look more realistic, such as making his gold armor look ancient and rusted, Mumm-Ra is ready to summon the ANCIENT SPIRITS OF EVIL to take down those pesky Thundercats!

The current figures based on the Nickelodeon TMNT series are pretty fun, though every character except the four turtles is extremely lacking in articulation. So here I present a fully poseable Shredder figure! I had to use parts from the original Shredder Playmates released, and the new Shredder figure with the removable helmet. One had poseable arms, the other had poseable legs, but even the one with poseable legs was far from perfect (or even functional).

I was expecting this to be an incredibly easy custom to make, but it turned out to be one of the most frustrating things I’ve worked on in quite some time. I had to crack open torsos, do some serious dremeling, and I’m still having flashbacks about prying off the arm and leg armor and keeping it intact. But in the end, I think it was worth it. I shaved down the arm blades to make them appear sharper, and gave the entire figure a full repaint, including the head underneath the helmet. I also repainted his katana and shuriken. After getting everything assembled and finished, he actually ended up being a little taller than before, which puts him at a better scale with the TMNT figures! And now the Shredder is now ready to dine on TURTLE SOUP!

New Custom Figure – Eye-Lash, Evil Mistress of Torture, Original Masters of the Universe Classics Figure

Hey everyone! To continue in the Halloween spirit, for my latest custom I bring you Eye-Lash! The cycloptic femme fatale, the evil mistress of torture for the Evil Horde! This idea was brought to me by Masters of the Universe fan Joe Martin. He had entered this into the 2012 Masters of the Universe Classics Create-A-Character contest. Sadly it didn’t win, so he sought me out to realize his idea in custom figure form. And let me say, I’m glad he did, because this was a fun one. The Evil Horde is easily my favorite faction of MOTU lore, due to the fact that most of the members are based on classic movie and literary monsters. Eye-Lash here is no different. She’s a cyclops for crying out loud! She’s covered in creepy eyes all over her outfit, she’s got a crazy looking “cat eye nine tails” whip, and she’s plenty evil to boot. She definitely fits in with the Evil Horde. Be sure to click the photo below to check out the full photo set and description for my custom Eye-Lash. You can also read a full character bio written up by her creator, Mr. Joe Martin himself.
